If Doc McStuffins were giving me a check-up my diagnosis would be tired-itis

We were having a great weekend and then boom! Phillip's car dies (the good car - and the good car isn't supposed to die) and we end up on the side of the road with a trunk full of groceries and two anxious children (this was Sunday night after church, followed by a trip to Walmart).  The upside: we were only about a mile from the house.  Mike Wu rescued us (Phillip's co-worker and friend who lives a few neighborhoods down from us in the other direction).  We transferred the groceries (and the kids) into his SUV and headed home while Phillip stayed with the Murano.  I fed the girls and then we waited.  And waited.  We picked Phillip up around 8:30.  He drove us home and then went back to wait with the Murano because long story short, State Farm's Emergency Road Service could not find a tow company that accepted their motorclub plan.  What?!  After a few more phone calls Phillip set up the tow and because he had my car, was able to drive himself home afterwards.  It was still a late night for the girls but was even later for Phillip.  He didn't get home until 10:00 (more than three hours after the breakdown).  He had a funny exchange with the tow guy that we still laugh about so it wasn't all bad.

After three days of arranging rides (which made for early mornings) and being late to work only to leave early (not surprisingly my job is not sympathetic even when bad things happen to good people), I am worn out.

That being said, I will miss riding with Phillip (we haven't carpooled in years).  We actually talked to each other on a weekday (well, I talked and he listened).  I will miss us both picking up the girls (we only dropped off together one morning but that was nice too).  Lilly loved it.  Mommy!  Daddy!  Mommy!  Daddy!  I will miss having that extra set of hands in the early evenings (Phillip gets home around 6:15 on a good night).

We picked up the Murano after church Wednesday night.  Tony wants to do one more thing to the car on Saturday, something to do with the airbag sensor, but the main issues - compressor, alternator and a few other minor fixes - have been resolved.  It wasn't cheap but it's good being a 2-car family again.

Waiting for Phillip

Snow!

We woke up to snow yesterday morning.  The fluffy, pretty kind.  The dogs had so much fun running around in the backyard - it was fun to watch.  But the girls (and Phillip), not so much.  Lilly was content to just look out the window (what?!) and Ellen only went out for a few minutes (if she had gloves she would have lasted longer).  Wimps!  I had to work or else we would have all gone out together.  I love snow!

Another highlight of my day was playing Clue with Ellen.  Phillip won both games but we'll get him next time (he is always the one to beat).  We also opened the perler bead set Ellen got for Christmas - fun!

Who needs TV or electronics when you have games and crafts that provide both joy/laughter and a creative outlet for young and old alike?

Keeping calm and carrying on

It turns out Lilly is not as healthy as an ox after all.  She wasn't quite herself the first part of the week but her symptoms were mild (congestion, cold-like) and appeared to be related to the change in weather.  When daycare called Wednesday afternoon letting us know she had a fever we knew there was more to it than we originally thought.  I ended up taking her to the doctor Thursday morning.  Diagnosis: ear infection (her first).  She messed with her right ear just enough for me to know she needed medical attention.  She is feeling much better after three days of antibiotics.  [This also gave me the opportunity to use the essential oils I had on hand (thanks Mom).  More to come as I am now a Wellness Advocate for doTERRA.]

Without fail as soon as one TV show ends Lilly calls out "What's next?"  And we always say "The TV will tell you" because, well, it does.  And now she typically answers her own question with a reassuring "The TV will tell us." #nickjr #disneyjunior

We converted Lilly's crib into a toddler bed this past weekend.  We thought about taking the crib out altogether and moving her into the full bed that has always been in her room but in the end, we decided to go with the "little big-girl bed" instead of the "big big-girl bed".  So far so good.

We switched dog food for various reasons and Lucy is one happy dog.  I think she was having trouble with the larger pieces in their old kind.

Lilly's teacher, Mrs. Bracamontes, said this a few months back and she was spot on... It has to be her [Lilly's] idea but even if it is her idea she might change her mind.  #freethinker #difficult

Phillip has been reading Roald Dahl's The Twits to Ellen (and sometimes Lilly) for the past several nights.  Two things:
1.  It was Phillip's idea.
2.  Phillip doesn't like to read.
#fatheroftheyear #love

Lilly:  Daddy hurt my feelings... on purpose.

Ellen has one really loose tooth.  She can't wait for it to come out so she write a note to the tooth fairy asking what her name is.  Any suggestions? :)

Regarding the New Year's Eve party we were going to be attending...
Me:  Are you excited about the party?
Lilly:  A party for me?
Me:  Well, it's actually a party for everyone.
Lilly:  Why do you say that Mommy?
Me:  This is a party celebrating a new year.  In other words, this has nothing to do with your birthday.
Lilly:  You can have my cake.  In other words, of course this is for my birthday.

A sisterly exchange...
Ellen:  Move, Lilly.
Lilly:  Never.

We ate at Nelly's Italian Cafe for the first time this past weekend.  The pizza was just ok (I am picky about my pizza) but the fried zucchini is worth going back for.  I also heard they have good chicken parmesan.

Ellen's favorite subject is Science.

Two girls sitting on the same couch watching the same show (but not the same episode) on two different devices.  #kindle #ipad

Ellen is into collecting Pokemon cards.  (Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?)  Ellen also recently started playing Minecraft.

Lilly likes to sleep with special toys or stuffed animals, but mostly toys.  She slept with Phillip's old Game Boy for several weeks in a row but has since moved on (she usually changes it up but she loved that Game Boy!)  She also takes small trinkets to daycare and stores them in her cubby until time to go home.  I used to baby-sit a boy who always had to be holding something and although Lilly is not on that level, it reminds me of Jack.

It goes without saying, but Lilly has officially mastered being 3.  She owns it.  (Was there ever any doubt?)

Disney World fall of 2015?  Maybe.

Ellen is no longer taking gymnastics.  I thought this was a family decision (save a little money, free up our Saturdays) that started with an [acknowledged] lack of interest on Ellen's part but apparently I was the only one who wanted her to take a break.  I have a feeling we will be signing her up for classes again soon.

Typical conversation starter while listening to the radio in the car...
Lilly:  What's this song about, Mommy?

Immediately after Ellen told us about her day...
Lilly:  I want to talk about my things now.

Lilly is the kind of child that would tell all of your family secrets.  And probably just because.

We took advantage of Phillip being off Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (first job where this has been a paid holiday-score!) and school being out by getting Ellen's eyes checked and teeth cleaned.  We switched the girls to Phillip's insurance plan this year so it was only fitting that he was the one to accompany Ellen to her appointments.  I was able to meet them at Panera for an early lunch since our dentist is just a few miles from my office.

By the way, Ellen loves Panera.

Eye Dr.:  Ellen's prescription changed a lot over the last year so she got new glasses (we picked them up Thursday afternoon).  Phillip sent me pictures of Ellen in different frames so I could be involved in the process.

Dentist:  No cavities!

Phillip took the girls to Harvey Park later Monday afternoon.  A great way to enjoy the spring-like weather we have (or had) been having.

It seems like we have had more time (or made more time) to be together and enjoy each other this month, something that had been lacking.  It's been really nice.

Tres años

Lilly's third and final birthday celebration (just presents) took place last Saturday morning.  She opened gifts from us, Mom and Dad, Andrea and Caleb and Aunt Diane and Uncle David.  She had a helper who may or may not have had the purest of intentions.  What's in this for me?

Is it wrong that I love this picture?  More specifically that I love Ellen in this picture? #jealous

So much packaging!

The girls and I enjoyed playing with Lilly's new toys while Phillip played racquetball with Mike Wu

Every Saturday should start off with presents!

Healthy as an ox

Lilly's 3-year-old stats

Height:  37 in (51%)

Weight:  33 lbs (73%)

------------------------------------

It worked out for me to take Lilly for her check up on her actual birthday, January 13th (I took a half day so I could eat lunch with Ellen and spend time with Lilly), but before heading to the doctor we enjoyed cupcakes with our friends at daycare.  Lilly ended up at the boys table.

We went to Chick-fil-A for Lilly's birthday dinner (Family Night).  The girls ate, played and each got ice cream and a balloon animal - a cheetah for Ellen and a pink penguin for Lilly.

Everyone knows it's not a proper celebration unless there are balloon animals involved.  Good thing Lilly's birthday fell on a Tuesday :)

Lilly was so excited about her birthday.  I can't tell you how many times we sang Happy Birthday in the weeks leading up to it.  Lots, as Lilly would say.  I really wanted to make it a special day.

Three!

We celebrated Lilly's 3rd birthday at Chuck E. Cheese on Saturday, January 10th, just a few days before it was official.  It was a family affair.  So glad Russ, Nancy, Kendra and Laurie were able to join us!

Laurie made chocolate cupcakes with yellow icing at Lilly's request (well, technically the chocolate was for Ellen but Lilly chose yellow)

Big winner!

Cashing in

Afterwards we all went to Toys R Us to play for a bit and then to Sopapillas for dinner (yum).  Russ came over to watch the Panthers game while Laurie and Nancy went to the movies.

Great day!
