Not the best thing that has happened in 2016, but definitely one of the best things, has been the opening of an extra lane on I-65, both north and southbound (the lanes technically opened in December but I am just now reaping the full benefits). What a difference this has made in my daily commute! The construction may never end, I gave up hope long ago, but this is a major development.
We discovered George has been lounging in Lilly's bed when no one is home. Her duvet cover is white. He is black. It didn't take long to solve the mystery but it was somewhat shocking since the dogs have never been allowed in either of the spare bedrooms and it never occurred to me that they would do so in our absence. It first happened, or at least the first time we noticed, was when Phillip and the girls were in North Carolina. I had changed their sheets and made their beds so when I glanced in Lilly's room a day later and noticed the pillow was knocked over and the covers were rumpled, I went in for a closer look. I almost couldn't believe it. (Similar to the time George drank out of the toilet right in front of me. When did this start happening and why aren't you ashamed?) I washed her duvet cover and told Phillip it was probably best for us to close the bedroom doors when we are gone (excluding ours). I was hoping this was going to be an isolated incident but it happened again when I was in North Carolina. We already check to make sure the toilet lids are down, cover the couch and chair with toys and put away any boots or jackets that may be lying around (George has a thing for zippers) before we leave the house, so why not add one more thing to the list. Sheesh.
I don't have a formal list of new year's resolutions per se, but I heard something on NPR the other day that stuck with me:
The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. This was merely a statement made during an interview on some important topic or another (I just happened to turn on the radio a few seconds before this was said), but it reminded me that I need to keep the main thing the main thing.
I hate that I missed 200,000 miles (I was watching for it) but 200,003 isn't bad. (This also happened in 2015, December 28th to be exact, which is making me rethink the title and direction of this post.)
And now for a few events that are related to the new year, as in they actually occurred in 2016, here's a rundown of our weekend. Sadly, neither of us can remember what we did Friday night. I just asked Phillip and if he can't recall, you know I don't have a clue. But I'm sure it was awesome. Actually, it may have involved me eating an egg roll in bed while watching TV with Lilly.
Saturday: In addition to doing laundry, Phillip and I cleaned out and organized our closet (we took 2 of those huge black garbage bags full of clothes and shoes to Goodwill). We also donated a bunch of old DVDs. The girls painted ceramic cupcakes, a Christmas gift from Nana and Grandpa. Lilly rode her imaginary horse, Pepper, around the house before running a few errands with Daddy. Ellen had Storyline on Saturday afternoon (I'm not exactly sure what this is but it has to do with making a video for Lads to Leaders). I went birthday present shopping for Lilly while Ellen was at church. Phillip made chicken spaghetti for dinner while I finished watching
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (last one!) and then I suggested he go see a movie. He and Laurie went to see
The Revenant. They both really liked it. I finally had time to look through the cookbooks I got for Christmas and after the girls went to bed, I caught up on a few shows I had saved on the DVR.
Sunday: We came home and ate leftovers after church. Phillip and I watched football while Lilly slept and Ellen did her own thing. Phillip really wanted the Vikings to win to help out Carolina but things didn't go his, or the kicker's, way. The girls played together after Lilly woke up from her nap and then it was time for church (our Sunday evening services start at 5 in the winter so the afternoon goes by quickly). We taught Children's Bible Hour and then headed home to make dinner. Phillip found a chicken and mushroom recipe online (similar to a dish from Panda Express) and he was excited to give it a try (I'm pretty sure that was the first time Phillip has ever said "prep for dinner" when telling me his afternoon plans. He did all of the chopping (and the shopping!) before church to save time. It turned out pretty good. I watched the Golden Globes last night and then to ensure I would be starting the week well-rested, I watched
Far From the Madding Crowd.
Needless to say, I'm tired.
Goodnight :)
