Children's Museum

My pictures didn't turn out all that great but this was a really neat place. I would like to go back sometime to explore a few areas that we missed - we didn't get a chance to go to the outdoor sand and water play area or to the "build it" room. Creating in the art studio was one of my favorite activities. Other highlights: playing dress up, the beanstalk that kids could climb to get to the upstairs level and the music class.

We can't all be good at everything

Who: Ellen

What: Spontaneously began to dance

When: Sunday, August 1st

Where: Old Navy

Why: "She just had to stop and dance", according to an employee who saw the whole thing happen

Unfortunately I missed it. Phillip was following Ellen around the store while I was in the clearance section. Later when Phillip told me about it, he was in tears from laughing so hard. It wasn't that she randomly started dancing, it was how she was dancing that was so funny. She's got moves but they are like Elaine's from that one episode of Seinfeld.

Nerd Alert

We had kind of a strange weekend. Or I should say we were strange this weekend. Laurie was house sitting for someone so it was just the 3 of us but Phillip was grumpy, Ellen was just Ellen but she is a complicated woman and I was just plain tired. And hot. Ellen took super long naps both Saturday and Sunday so bedtime was a challenge. I don't know what our deal was... we did our normal weekend activities but we were all in rare form. I did some shopping for Ellen's birthday while she slept on Sunday afternoon. We went to the zoo on Saturday with the Moss Family. It was overcast part of the time which made the heat slightly more tolerable but we were all sweating within minutes of being outside. Ellen had her plan mapped out before we even got to the zoo: animals, playground and carousel. We didn't see all of the animals this time but after 3 hours we were ready to cool down, eat lunch and take a nap.

Just a few things about Ellen:

Laurie has a bag of miniature Reese's peanut butter cups in the pantry and Ellen is constantly asking for one. Only she calls them itsy bitsy cups.

Ellen wore panties all day Sunday, even to church. No accidents! She wore them to school this morning too. She's been going potty at school rather consistently but still wears a pull up most of the time.

Ellen is transitioning to a new room at daycare. She will rejoin some of her older friends that I know she has been missing. She is officially moving up next week but I think she will spend the majority of this week in that classroom. We will save $5 a week... not much but it is nice to have a bill that is decreasing instead of increasing.

Ellen has always been inquisitive but this is getting ridiculous! I need to work on my patience in this area but is it really necessary for her to ask the exact same question 10 times in a row? It is usually out of excitement (it happens mostly in the car when we are on our way somewhere) so we don't want to discourage her in any way but it becomes frustrating when our answers are clear and we know she understands what we are saying.

Besides the onslaught of redundant questions and her occasional sassy attitude we are really enjoying our little talker. And she is constantly talking. As my dad said last week, she goes to sleep talking, talks in her sleep and wakes up talking. We never know what she is going to say next but it is sure to make us smile. I can't find the exact words I want to say but she makes my heart sing.

Ellen is biter, a late bloomer biter. It isn't happening often but it has happened twice in the last week. She bit me on the shoulder and bit Phillip on the chest. In both cases we were playing and it was not out of anger but she bit us surprisingly hard. I am not sure where this is coming from since we assumed her biting days were long gone, and even when it was more age appropriate, she was usually the one who got bit (she was a notorious toy thief). We have had several talks with her and are hoping she won't take her act out on the road.

Ellen calls us Mom and Dad more than Mommy and Daddy. At first it was strange but I have gotten used to it. Just as long as she doesn't start calling us Alaina and Phillip :)
